ITMO Researchers Presented Innovative Lasers


The lasers were developed at ITMO Univeristy`s Center of Laser Physics. Its` specialists deal with eye-safe lasers that have wave-length equal to 1,5 – 2,1 micrometers. These devices are usually applied for distance measuring equipment, telecommunication systems and light detecting systems.

The researchers of Center of Laser Physics managed to invent ultra-compact solid-state laser with energy conversion efficiency, which was almost equivalent to the record ECE proper to similar devices.  The physicists in alliance with colleagues from Vavilov State Optical Institute developed an innovative passive Q-switch made of nanocrystals.

“Thanks to passive Q-switch the device is simpler, cheaper and more precise. Usually such devices include active Q-switches that increase level of fails… Passive Q-switch, in simple words, is just a piece of glass,” noted Vadim Poliakov, leading engineer of International Laboratory “Laser System.”

The laser can measure distances equal to three kilometers. One can equip unmanned aerial vehicles with these lasers. The research team has almost fulfilled this work, the device has already passed climate tests and currently it is ready for batch production.

“Nowadays distance measuring devices produced in Russia include lasers with lamp pumping. They operate on a frequency of 1 Hz. Modern industry needs more effective equipment that is why we suppose that our invention will be relevant. Furthermore we have already developed several experimental samples and have provided all required tests,” noted Mr. Poliakov.

ITMO University researchers also develop a crystal-based laser Er:YAG. Thanks to the lowest possible heat radiation the device can operate on a high frequency and make the whole equipment fast-acting.

“Prototypes of this laser are not globally widespread. To construct ready-for-use device means to develop groundbreaking technology. One can apply it not only for distance measuring equipment, but also for computer vision systems. The characteristics of these systems allow to use them in scattering mediums and fog…” said Vadim Poliakov.

Previously the researchers of Center of Laser Physics presented their development at exhibition "Photonics. The world of Lasers and Optics," which took place in Moscow on March 14-17. They are also going to participate in "International Conference Laser Optics."
